What Entrepreneurship 101 taught me about Malta founders

We built Entrepreneurship 101 around a single constraint: no one on stage who had not lived what they were talking about. No theorists. No consultants. No academics presenting frameworks derived from other people's experience.

That sounds obvious. In practice, it rules out about 80% of the speakers you would typically put on a startup panel.

Why Malta's founder community is different

Malta has a startup ecosystem that is genuinely unusual. It is small enough that everyone knows everyone — which accelerates trust, but also creates a social dynamic where people are reluctant to share the unvarnished version of what building a company actually looks like.

The failures are not discussed. The pivots are not examined. The moments where everything was on the line and you did not know what to do next — those conversations happen in private, if they happen at all. Entrepreneurship 101 was built to change that.

The lessons that move the needle only come from people who have taken the risk themselves.

What I saw in that room

The event drew founders at every stage — pre-idea, early-stage, and operators who had been building for years. What struck me was the quality of the questions. Not the polite, safe questions you get at corporate events. Real questions from people who were genuinely trying to figure things out.

When an audience asks real questions, it means they trusted the room enough to be vulnerable in it. That is hard to create, and when it happens, it means something.

What comes next

We are running more of these — the next one in May, with smaller rooms, more focused conversations, and more time for the connections that actually matter. Malta has no shortage of ambition. What founders here deserve is a community that respects that ambition enough to be honest with them.
